Ramadan: Nasarawa Residents Decry Soaring Food Prices, Beg Government for Urgent Intervention
Consumers Lament Hardship as Cost of Rice, Beans, Sugar, Others Spike Ahead of Holy Month
Residents of Nasarawa State have appealed to the state government to urgently intervene following a sharp increase in the prices of essential food commodities ahead of the Ramadan fasting period.
A cross-section of residents who spoke to Rimawaglobalnews lamented that the rising cost of staple food items such as rice, beans, sugar, flour, cooking oil, and other basic commodities has made it difficult for many families to adequately prepare for the holy month.
They expressed concern that the continuous hike in food prices is worsening the economic hardship faced by ordinary citizens, especially low-income earners, widows, and vulnerable households who depend on daily income for survival.
Some residents attributed the increase to high transportation costs, inflation, and increased demand as Muslims make preparations for Ramadan, while others called on authorities to monitor market activities and prevent price exploitation by traders.
“We are appealing to the Nasarawa State Government to come to our aid by introducing measures that will cushion the effect of the high cost of food items. Many families are struggling to cope,” one resident said.
The residents urged the government to consider interventions such as subsidized food sales, price control mechanisms, and support for vulnerable groups to enable Muslims observe the Ramadan fast with ease and dignity.
Ramadan is a sacred period observed by Muslims worldwide, characterized by fasting, prayer, charity, and spiritual reflection.
