Nigeria’s para-badminton sensation, Eniola Bolaji, has ascended to the World No. 1 position in the women’s SL3 category, following the latest rankings released by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) on Tuesday, February 17, 2026.
Bolaji’s rise to the pinnacle of global para-badminton comes on the heels of her historic silver medal performance at the 2026 World Para-Badminton Championship held in Bahrain. She delivered a spirited display throughout the tournament but fell 2–0 (21–12, 21–17) in the final to Japan’s Shino Kawai at the New Capital Hall on February 14.
Dethrones Indonesian Rival, Extends Continental Dominance
With her remarkable achievement, Bolaji dethroned Indonesia’s Qonitah Ikhtiar Syakuroh, who previously held the top spot.
Her ascent was further strengthened by her triumph at the Egypt International in January, where she successfully defended her title for the second consecutive year.
The multiple national and African champion’s consistency and dominance have now firmly established her as the leading para-badminton player in the world in her category.

President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, Mr. Francis Orbih, described Bolaji’s emergence as World No. 1 as a historic milestone for Nigeria and the African continent.

He added that Bolaji’s success is the result of deliberate investments and structured support from key stakeholders, including the National Sports Commission, Abia State Government, and private partners such as GIG Logistics.

Despite narrowly missing the gold medal, Bolaji made history as the first African athlete to win a silver medal at the Para-Badminton World Championship, marking a significant breakthrough for African para sports.
