The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has suspended the Executive Chairman of Lafia Local Government Council for a period of three months over what it described as a violation of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
The resolution, contained in House Resolution No. 49 and communicated to Governor Abdullahi Sule on December 9, 2025, followed a motion of urgent public importance raised by Hon. Musa Ibrahim Abubakar (Doma South), Chairman, House Committee on Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Community Development.
According to the House, the Executive Chairman announced the suspension of the Speaker of the Lafia Legislative Council without recourse to the legislature, an action lawmakers considered an overreach of his powers.
During deliberations, members unanimously held that the Chairman’s action amounted to a breach of Sections 7 and 128 of the Constitution governing local government administration in Nigeria.
The House further resolved that while the Chairman remains suspended, the Legislative Council should continue to function within its constitutional mandate.
