The North-Central Zonal Public Hearing on the review of the 1999 Constitution, organized by the House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review, held yesterday in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital, with delegates from Nasarawa, Plateau, Benue, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in attendance.
Representing Governor Abdullahi Sule, the Honorable Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Nasarawa State, Barr. Isaac Danladi, presented the state’s official position.
He expressed gratitude to the House Committee for hosting the hearing in Lafia and confirmed that the state had submitted a comprehensive memorandum covering key reform areas.
“We have submitted a memorandum that addresses critical issues such as electoral and judicial reform, security policy, devolution of powers, fiscal federalism, and citizenship rights,” Danladi said.
On electoral reform, the Attorney General recommended the establishment of an independent agency to regulate political parties, separate from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). According to him, this will reduce political interference and allow INEC to focus solely on election management.
Nasarawa State also declared support for the establishment of an Electoral Offences Commission, but insisted that such a body should be created by an Act of the National Assembly, not by constitutional amendment.
The state further supported the proposal for the conduct of national elections on the same day, citing the need to reduce electoral costs, improve security, and minimize political violence.
