In response to growing concerns over poor infrastructure in public schools, Nasarawa State Governor, Engr. Abdullahi A. Sule, has approved the supply of 15,716 chairs and desks to primary schools across the State.
This development was revealed by the Executive Chairman of the Nasarawa State Universal Basic Education Board (NSUBEB), Dr. Kassim Muhammad Kassim, during an interactive session with journalists in his office on Tuesday.
Dr. Kassim, who has been conducting unscheduled visits to schools across the State, said the sorry state of learning conditions, including pupils sitting on bare floors, compelled him to present the urgent situation to the Governor, who responded swiftly by approving the procurement and supply of furniture.
“Thanks to Governor Sule for listening to the public outcry. Following our report, he immediately awarded the contract for 15,716 chairs and desks and directed that the items be delivered within a month for onward distribution to schools,” Dr. Kassim stated.
He described the Governor’s response as timely and exemplary, emphasizing that the intervention will significantly improve the learning environment in the State’s basic education system.
Dr. Kassim, who described himself as a “field chairman,” noted that his visits to classrooms revealed harsh realities.
“I personally observed children sitting on broken furniture, bare floors, or standing by the walls during lessons. It’s disheartening,” he said.
In some schools, he added, furniture was either non-existent or in a dilapidated state, with pupils forced to learn under extremely uncomfortable conditions.
“Public basic education is the foundation of our future. With Governor Sule’s support, we are determined to turn things around. The situation I saw was unacceptable, but change is possible, and I’m fully committed to achieving it,” he assured.
Dr. Kassim reaffirmed his commitment to aligning with the Governor’s education policies and thanked him for the confidence reposed in his leadership.
“We are reforming basic education in Nasarawa State. With the right vision, energy, and support, we will restore public confidence and ensure that every child learns in dignity,” he concluded.
