The aftermath of fuel subsidy removal continues to ripple across Lafia, the capital city of Nasarawa State, causing widespread disruptions in transportation and everyday life.
A sharp reduction in the number of commercial motorcycles, commonly referred to as okadas, has been observed on the city’s roads.
This development has compounded the hardship faced by residents, who now grapple with a staggering 100% increase in transport fares.
Our correspondent, who monitored the situation, reported that the scarcity of motorcycles has forced many commuters to seek alternative, often less accessible, means of transportation.
The hike in transport fares has further deepened the woes of residents, many of whom are struggling to adjust to the new economic realities brought about by the subsidy removal.
Speaking to our correspondent, several residents expressed their frustrations.
“The sudden increase in transport costs has made it difficult for me to move around the city,” said a visibly distressed resident. “What used to cost ₦100 now costs ₦200 or more. This is too much for us to bear.”
Commercial motorcycle operators have equally decried the situation, blaming the high cost of fuel for their dwindling numbers and increased fares.
“Fuel prices have doubled, and it’s becoming impossible to sustain our operations,” one operator lamented. “Many of us are parking our bikes because we can’t afford to buy fuel and still make a profit.”
The ripple effects of this economic challenge are far-reaching. Businesses relying on affordable transportation are experiencing delays and increased costs, while families are being forced to adjust their budgets to accommodate the steep rise in daily expenses.
“This situation affects almost all segments of human life,” another operator explained, noting that the transportation sector is often the backbone of local economies.
He urged the government to consider measures that would cushion the effects of the subsidy removal and provide relief to both operators and commuters.
Residents and stakeholders in Lafia are calling on the government to intervene swiftly, as the continued hardship threatens to disrupt social and economic stability in the region.
