In a significant move, the Nasarawa State Government has announced a comprehensive ban on fishing across several key water bodies in the state, effective from April 22, 2024, through February 2025.
This decision was revealed by Judah Attah, the Director of Fishery and Aquaculture, during an interactive session with the Fishery Cooperative and Aquaculture members of Nasarawa State.
The announcement was made during a meeting held at the State Ministry of Agriculture, presided over by Honorable Bashir Mohammed Umar, the State Chairman.
The ban affects all fishing activities in Tungan Nupawa, Feferuwa Lake, and other significant water bodies within the state. Although no explicit reasons were provided for the ban, it is speculated to be part of broader environmental and regulatory measures.
Despite the official commencement date being April 5, 2024, the enforcement will begin later in the month.
This decision follows mounting complaints from local fish dealers in Tungan Nupawa, Sabon Gida, and Feferuwa communities.
They allege that officials from the State Ministry of Agriculture have been extorting fishermen, demanding N20,000 for access to the water.
Additionally, the Fishery Cooperative and Aquaculture members submitted a list of individuals responsible for polluting water bodies in Kututure, Doma, and Iggah in Nasarawa Eggon Local Governments.
This submission underscores the ongoing environmental challenges facing the state's aquatic ecosystems.
The controversy has been exacerbated by internal disputes within the fishing community. Danjuma, an intermediary of the association, has been accused of instigating unrest among members by supporting harsh and unfriendly policies.
Efforts to reach the Commissioner of Agriculture for comments were unsuccessful.
This ban marks a critical period for the state's fishing industry, as it aims to address pollution and regulate fishing activities for sustainable development.
