The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has taken decisive action by sealing two unapproved facilities located in Lafia and Obi Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Nasarawa State.
Mr. Matthew Adeoye, the NAFDAC Coordinator for Nasarawa State, disclosed this during an interview with Journalists in Lafia on Tuesday. Adeoye explained that these facilities were shut down due to their illegal operation in unhygienic environments without the required registration.
According to Adeoye, the facilities were discovered during routine surveillance activities conducted by NAFDAC Regulatory Officers based on intelligence gathered.
One of the sealed facilities, Apexy Table Water, was operating without legal authorization, while the other facility was involved in the illicit cloning of agrochemical products.
"These companies were found to be operating without any approval, which is a direct violation of the NAFDAC Act CAP. F.33 LFN 2004," Adeoye emphasized.
Several individuals involved in these illegal activities were apprehended and handed over to the police for further investigation.
Adeoye highlighted the serious negative impact of such illegal operations on farm produce and public health. He noted that the consumption of adulterated products like packaged water produced in unhygienic conditions could lead to waterborne diseases.
The sealed facilities will remain prohibited from further production, and their equipment has been confiscated by NAFDAC. Adeoye urged the public to report any suspected producers, distributors, or retailers of falsified and adulterated NAFDAC-regulated products to enable prompt action.
Additionally, Adeoye advised manufacturers to comply with NAFDAC regulations by registering their products to avoid legal consequences, stressing that NAFDAC maintains zero tolerance for falsified, adulterated, and unregistered regulatory products.
