MAKU HINTS AT NASARAWA NORTH SENATE BID, AWAITS OFFICIAL VACANCY DECLARATION
…Stakeholders Mount Pressure, Endorse Former Information Minister for Bye-Election
Former Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, has hinted at his readiness to contest the forthcoming bye-election for the vacant Nasarawa North Senatorial seat, following mounting calls from political stakeholders and constituents across the zone.
Maku gave the indication on Sunday while addressing a delegation of critical stakeholders from the five electoral wards of Akun Development Area, Ubbe, Alushi Ginda, Ende, Eva/Washo, and Wakma, who paid him a consultative visit at his residence near OLA Hospital in Akwanga.
Responding to appeals from the delegation, the former minister said he would formally declare his intention only after the Senate and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officially declare the seat vacant.
“There is a limit to which one can resist the call of the people.
The vacancy has not yet been declared by the Senate and INEC, so it will be premature to make an official declaration now.
However, I can assure you that if my people call on me to serve, even to sweep the floor, I will not refuse,” Maku stated.
Describing himself as a servant of the people, he emphasized that leadership is a responsibility defined by public trust and collective will.
“With these calls coming from across Keffi Zone, Lafia Zone, and beyond, I believe the voice of the people is the voice of God. When the time comes, I will respond appropriately,” he added.
The delegation, led by former Chairman of Akun Development Area, Hon. Francis Kuje, described Maku as the most credible and experienced candidate to represent Nasarawa North at the National Assembly, citing his track record of service and commitment to grassroots development.
Other stakeholders, including Dr. Garba, Baba Ekpu, James Kotso, Peter Azime Kuje, and Solomon Nangba (popularly known as Pala Pala), unanimously endorsed Maku, urging him to heed the call to contest the bye-election.
They expressed strong confidence in his leadership capacity, political experience, and ability to effectively represent the interests of the senatorial district.
The Nasarawa North Senatorial seat became vacant following the death of Senator Godiya Akwashiki on December 31, 2025, creating the need for a bye-election to fill the position.
Political observers note that Maku’s potential entry into the race could significantly reshape the contest, given his extensive experience in governance and enduring grassroots support across Nasarawa State.
