The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced a coordinated global support initiative aimed at assisting with the medical treatment and legal defence of its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu, citing escalating costs and ongoing health concerns.
In an internal memorandum dated February 13, 2026, and signed by the group’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful, members worldwide were urged to support partner organisations providing legal, medical, and diplomatic assistance to Kanu.
The memo, circulated to IPOB coordinators, unit leaders, and members globally, described the initiative as a matter of “urgent collective responsibility,” stressing that sustained support is necessary to ensure continued access to medical care and legal representation.
Rising Legal and Medical Costs
According to the communication, Kanu’s recent transfer to a detention facility in Sokoto has significantly increased logistical expenses associated with maintaining regular legal and medical visits.
The memo stated that all 13 principal attorneys representing Kanu, as well as his lead physician, Emeritus Professor Martin Aghaji, are based in Abuja. Each visit reportedly requires air travel, with average return airfare per person estimated at approximately ₦500,000.
IPOB leadership described the financial burden as substantial and called for coordinated global support to sustain ongoing interventions.
