The Emir of Lafia, Justice Sidi Bage Muhammad (Rtd), on Monday paid an unscheduled visit to the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, appealing to lawmakers to temper justice with mercy by lifting the three-month suspension placed on the Executive Chairman of Lafia Local Government Area, Hon. Muhammad Haliru Arabo.
The first-class monarch, who is also the Chairman of the Nasarawa State Traditional Council of Chiefs, was accompanied by members of his council and received by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Dr. Danladi Jatau, in his office.
The visit followed the recent crisis in Lafia Local Government Area which culminated in the Assembly suspending the chairman over alleged misconduct.
According to him, the palace had already summoned both the chairman and members of the local government legislature, cautioned them, and resolved to seek reconciliation.
He described the chairman as “a child who erred,” noting that while punishment and correction were necessary, pardon was equally important.
The Emir commended the Speaker and members of the House for what he described as their commitment to peace, unity and development, as well as their effective partnership with the executive arm of government for the progress of the state.
He assured the Assembly that the matter would not reoccur.
He further disclosed that he had directed the suspended chairman to withdraw the court case instituted over the matter, adding that the process of withdrawal had already commenced.
In his response, Speaker Danladi Jatau thanked the Emir for the visit, describing it as a mark of respect and responsible leadership.
He praised the monarch for his role in promoting peace and stability across the state.
The Speaker assured the Emir that the House would deliberate on his appeal and follow due legislative procedures in addressing the matter.
However, he emphasized that withdrawal of the case from court was a necessary first step to allow for legislative intervention.
“You are a father to us all, and we will continue to accord you the honour and respect you deserve,” the Speaker said, adding that the Assembly would do what is needful in line with the law.
The visit underscored ongoing efforts by traditional and political leaders to resolve the Lafia Local Government crisis and restore harmony in the area.
