Former Nigerian President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, has refuted claims that the recent disturbances in Guinea-Bissau amounted to a coup, asserting that President Umaro Sissoco Embaló’s actions misrepresented the situation.

Speaking in a viral video circulating on social media, Jonathan stated that it was Embaló himself who contacted media organisations to announce a coup, even while he remained in control.

According to him, such behaviour contradicts the realities of genuine coup scenarios.Jonathan, who noted his experience and understanding of how heads of state are typically treated during real military takeovers, maintained that the events in Guinea-Bissau did not align with known coup patterns.

His remarks have since triggered fresh debates on political stability and crisis communication in West Africa.-
