The Emir of Kano, His Highness Muhammadu Sanusi II, has delivered a scathing critique of Nigeria’s leadership over the years, accusing many public office holders of lacking values, integrity, or a sense of legacy.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, the former Central Bank Governor decried the erosion of the nation’s value system, lamenting that those entrusted with power have used it primarily to enrich themselves at the expense of the people.
“The entire value system of the country has been eroded. Many people go into government to make money — but you don’t go into government to make money,” the monarch declared.
He criticized the mentality of some political elites who measure their worth by material possessions rather than by public service or national impact.
“We have been ruled by people who have no values; they have no name behind them, and they have no desire to leave a name after them,” Sanusi said.
“These are people who define themselves by what they own, how many houses they have, how many private jets, how many billions in bank accounts, and they think that is something.”
According to the Emir, such individuals remain unbothered by the negative public perception they attract, even when citizens openly see them as corrupt or morally bankrupt.
“It is not important to them that people look at them and only see thieves, see criminals, people who have taken the commonwealth. It is simply not important, because for them, values do not matter.”
Sanusi’s comments come amid growing public dissatisfaction with governance, especially in light of widespread corruption, economic hardship, and widening inequality in the country.
The outspoken traditional ruler, who has consistently advocated for ethical leadership, reform, and accountability in Nigeria’s public service, warned that unless core societal values are restored, sustainable national development will remain elusive.
Sanusi has long been known for his fearless stance against corruption and his calls for transparency and purposeful leadership.
His latest remarks are expected to reignite conversations on leadership integrity, legacy, and the future of governance in Nigeria.
