In response to widespread rumors and inquiries, the Nasarawa State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a clarification regarding the ongoing discussions on the National Minimum Wage (NMW) implementation.
According to a statement by the Secretary of the NLC, Ahmed Mohd Naibi, a committee on the minimum wage was constituted over two weeks ago to address the matter. The committee, which includes representatives from both the government and labor unions, established a technical sub-committee tasked with drafting a proposed payment table.
This sub-committee completed its assignment within the stipulated timeframe and submitted its report, which includes three proposals, including the federal table.
The report was received by the committee chairman, the Deputy Governor of Nasarawa State, who pledged to review it and consult with Governor Abdullahi Sule for further directives.
However, progress stalled as the Governor was out of the country on a laser Hajj pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia. He has since returned, but no official communication regarding the continuation of the discussions has been made.
Labor representatives have also informed the government of a directive from the NLC National Body, mandating state governments to implement the new minimum wage by the end of November or face industrial action.
The NLC has urged members to remain calm, debunking rumors that the Governor is set to sign an agreement imminently.
The statement emphasized that negotiations are ongoing, and the public will be updated as developments unfold.
"Please disregard the rumors and await further information," Naibi stated.
