NSUKKA ENVIRONMENTAL TASKFORCE ORDERS SHOP OWNERS TO REMOVE CASSAVA PEELS FROM ROADSIDE, CLEAR DRAINAGES

The Nsukka Local Government Area Environmental Taskforce Committee has directed shop owners operating along Ugwu Nkwo on Enugu Road to immediately remove bags of cassava peels dumped by the roadside and clear blocked drainage channels as part of efforts to promote environmental sanitation.
The enforcement exercise, conducted on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, was led by the Chairman of the Environmental Taskforce Committee, Comr. Omeje Onyekachi. During the inspection, traders were instructed to open the gutters in front of their shops and desist from indiscriminate disposal of refuse into waterways.
The committee identified two shop owners who had deposited cassava peels along the roadside for commercial purposes.
According to the taskforce, the practice constituted environmental pollution, obstructed drainage channels, and hindered the free movement of pedestrians.
Acting on credible intelligence, the committee directed the affected traders to immediately evacuate the cassava peels and thoroughly clean their surroundings.
The taskforce said the operation reflects the commitment of the Executive Chairman of Nsukka Local Government Area, Engr. Jude Chinedu Asogwa, to ensuring a clean, healthy, and environmentally sustainable council through effective sanitation and proper waste management.
The committee also urged residents, traders, and business owners to adopt responsible waste disposal practices and avoid actions that threaten public health or obstruct public infrastructure.
It reaffirmed that routine monitoring and enforcement exercises would continue across the local government, warning that individuals and businesses found violating environmental sanitation regulations would face appropriate sanctions in accordance with the law.
