Mai Dunama Foundation Intensifies Sickle Cell Awareness, Disburses Ramadan Sadaqa

By Suleiman Abubakar Rimi Uku Lafia

The Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Mai Dunama Sickle Cell Foundation, Rabi Mai Dunama, has reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to raising awareness on sickle cell disorder and supporting less privileged patients across communities.

Speaking with journalists shortly after the distribution of Ramadan Sadaqa, the NGO leader said the foundation was established to educate the public on the dangers of sickle cell and promote preventive measures, particularly through genotype testing before marriage.
She explained that the organization focuses on community and school outreaches, where individuals are enlightened on the importance of knowing their genotype status to make informed marital decisions and reduce the prevalence of the disease.

According to her, the foundation also provides free genotype testing for youths, offers premarital counseling, and trains healthcare workers on basic management of sickle cell patients at primary care levels.
Rabi Mai Dunama further emphasized the need to correct misconceptions about sickle cell inheritance, noting that the condition does not strictly follow a fixed pattern, as multiple children in a family can be affected.

She called on government and relevant stakeholders to strengthen policies that mandate genotype screening before marriage, stressing that cultural and religious institutions must play a more active role in promoting compliance.
In a related development, a beneficiary, Yahanasu Ahmed Mohammed, commended the founder for her humanitarian efforts and dedication to supporting people living with sickle cell disorder.

She appealed to government at all levels to provide greater support for individuals affected by the condition, particularly in the areas of free medication, healthcare services, and sustained public awareness campaigns.
Highlighting the significance of the Ramadan outreach, the foundation noted that the Sadaqa distribution was aimed at assisting vulnerable individuals during the fasting period, while encouraging acts of charity in pursuit of spiritual rewards.

The Mai Dunama Sickle Cell Foundation continues to expand its advocacy, targeting both rural and urban communities with education, healthcare support, and humanitarian interventions.
