AVID Condemns Killing of Ondo Monarch, Demands Release of Nnamdi Kanu
…Calls for international probe, urges Yoruba leaders to reconsider stance
The American Veterans of Igbo Descent (AVID), a United States-based non-profit organization comprising honorably discharged military veterans of Igbo ancestry, has condemned the killing of traditional ruler, Oba Kehinde Falodun, describing the incident as tragic and unacceptable.
In a statement issued on February 19, 2026, and signed by its President, Dr. Sylvester Onyia, and Secretary, Dr. Godson Obiagwu, the group expressed deep sorrow over the death of the monarch, who was reportedly killed in his palace in Agamo Community, Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State on February 18, 2026.
AVID extended condolences to the royal family, the people of Agamo community, Ondo State, and the Yoruba nation, stressing that no community deserves such violence.
The organization alleged that armed attackers suspected to be bandits invaded the monarch’s palace, describing the attack as part of a broader insecurity challenge confronting communities across Nigeria.
The group also referenced the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, stating that his continued detention remains a matter of concern to its members and supporters.
AVID called for what it described as an independent international investigation into insecurity across Nigeria, particularly attacks targeting communities and traditional institutions.
The group further urged political leaders, traditional rulers, and the international community to take proactive steps toward addressing insecurity and promoting justice and national stability.
According to the statement, AVID emphasized the need for unity among Nigeria’s ethnic nationalities, urging leaders across the country to work collectively to ensure lasting peace and security.
The organization reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for justice, security, and the protection of lives and ancestral communities.
