Workers of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), backed by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), on Monday staged a protest at the National Industrial Court in Abuja, intensifying their ongoing industrial action over unresolved labour grievances.
The protest forms part of a total and indefinite strike embarked upon by FCTA workers following what organised labour described as persistent violations of workers’ rights by the FCTA management and political leadership.
The NLC, which directed and endorsed the protest, declared its full support for the strike, insisting that the action was justified in view of long-standing issues bordering on poor welfare, unpaid promotion arrears and lack of basic working tools.
Placard-carrying protesters flooded the court premises with bold inscriptions such as “Wike must go!!”, “Abuja no be Rivers”, “Pay promotion arrears”, “Enough is Enough” and “No working tools”, reflecting growing frustration among workers.
Labour leaders at the protest reiterated that the strike would remain in force until the authorities respond meaningfully to their demands, warning against attempts to suppress the action through legal or administrative measures.
The FCTA workers’ agitation adds to rising labour tensions in the Federal Capital Territory, amid concerns over governance style, workers’ welfare and industrial harmony under the current administration.
