The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nasarawa State has suffered another setback following the defection of the member representing Toto/Gadabuke Constituency, Hon. Muhammad Garba Isimbabi, to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Dr. Danladi Jatau, announced the lawmaker's defection during plenary in Lafia on Monday after reading his letter of resignation from the APC.
In the letter, Hon. Isimbabi recalled that he was originally elected into the House on the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) before later joining the APC due to the crisis that engulfed the NNPP at the national level.
He explained that after consultations with critical stakeholders in his constituency and in consideration of his future political aspirations, he had decided to leave the APC and join the SDP.
According to the lawmaker, the decision, which takes effect from June 2026, was taken in the interest of his constituents and Nasarawa State, assuring that he would continue to discharge his legislative responsibilities diligently under the platform of the SDP.
The latest defection comes barely a week after two lawmakers—Hon. Muhammed Adamu Omadefu (Keana Constituency) and Hon. Ajegena Kudu (Nasarawa Eggon East Constituency)—also dumped the APC for the SDP.
With the development, the composition of the 24-member Nasarawa State House of Assembly now stands at APC – 13 members, PDP – 7 members, and SDP – 4 members.
Meanwhile, the House also received the report of its Standing Committee on Public Accounts on "A Bill for a Law to Establish the Nasarawa State Character Commission and for Other Matters Connected Thereto."
Presenting the report, Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Solomon Yakubu Akwashiki, highlighted the objectives and key provisions of the proposed legislation.
The bill, sponsored by the member representing Awe North Constituency, Hon. Hudu A. Hudu, seeks to establish the Nasarawa State Character Commission to promote equity, fairness, and inclusiveness in public service and governance.
Speaker Dr. Danladi Jatau subsequently fixed August 31, 2026, for the House to deliberate on the committee's report.
