The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed counterfeit, expired, and substandard products valued at over N5 billion in Lafia, Nasarawa State, as part of ongoing efforts to rid markets across the North-Central region of harmful goods.
The destruction exercise, carried out at the Angwan Rere dumpsite, involved products seized from Nasarawa, Benue, Kogi, Niger, and Plateau States during routine surveillance and enforcement operations.
NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Christianah Adeyeye, represented by the North-Central Zonal Director, Mr. Kenneth Azikiwe, said the items were confiscated during monitoring activities aimed at curbing the distribution of unsafe products in Nigerian markets.
She explained that some of the destroyed goods were voluntarily surrendered by traders after being identified as expired or damaged, urging the public to support the agency by reporting producers and distributors of fake or substandard items.
Prof. Adeyeye reaffirmed NAFDAC’s commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring that only certified products circulate in the country.
In his remarks, the Nasarawa State Commissioner for Security and Safety Matters, Usman Baba, commended NAFDAC for its vigilance and pledged the state government’s support to strengthen market sanitation and product authentication efforts.
