A wave of anxiety has swept through Kogi State’s political corridors following strong indications that the state government may soon carry out a sweeping purge of political appointees believed to be loyal to Hon. James Abiodun Faleke.
The development follows remarks made by former Governor Yahaya Bello during the recent convocation of the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara. While addressing the gathering, Bello stated pointedly:
“Very soon, we shall know those who belong to us,”
a comment widely interpreted as a warning to officials perceived to be aligning with political interests outside the current political structure.
Sources within the government disclosed that lists of appointees suspected to be sympathetic to Hon. Faleke are already being compiled.
This revelation has sparked heightened tension across ministries, departments, agencies, and local government councils.
The anticipated purge is reportedly connected to increased agitation from political groups urging Faleke to join the forthcoming governorship race, an ambition that has unsettled some power blocs within the ruling party.
A government insider told our Correspondent that
“There is panic everywhere. Many officials fear they may be removed simply because they are perceived to be close to Faleke.”
Tensions escalated further following recent political movements and endorsements seen by some stakeholders as evidence of Faleke’s growing influence, despite his silence on whether he intends to vie for the governorship position.
Reactions to the looming shake-up remain sharply divided.
While some party figures view the move as an attempt to suppress legitimate political aspirations and deepen internal divisions, others argue that reinforcing loyalty is essential to maintaining stability within the political structure.
A supporter of Senator Sunday Karimi and serving Special Adviser, who preferred anonymity, expressed frustration over the situation:
“I will soon resign.
I am tired of this kind of government where the former governor continues to dictate policies. Kogi has become a banana republic.”
As of the time of filing this report, the state government has neither confirmed nor denied the planned dismissals. However, reliable sources indicate that an official announcement may be imminent.
Political analysts warn that such a move could further polarize the ruling party and heighten instability across the state.
