The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has said that the recent defection of Hon. Abdulmumin Jibrin Kofa to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and that of Ambassador Oluremi Oguntoyinbo to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) did not come as a surprise to the party.

According to the NNPP, the wave of defections currently rocking the party is a direct consequence of the leadership style of its former presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and his political movement, the Kwankwasiyya Group.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the party’s National Secretary, Dr. Ogini Olaposi, the NNPP said the internal crisis within the party, which intensified after the 2023 general elections, was the root cause of the current instability and exodus of prominent members.

Dr. Olaposi explained that the leadership tussle and internal disagreements that followed the polls had weakened the party’s cohesion and undermined its vision of providing a credible alternative to Nigerians.

He noted that while the party remains committed to rebuilding its structure and reclaiming its lost glory, it has become necessary to address the actions and influence of individuals whose personal ambitions have overshadowed collective progress.

The statement reaffirmed the NNPP’s commitment to transparency, unity, and democratic values, stressing that the party’s focus remains on strengthening its base and preparing for future electoral contests.
