The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has held a special thanksgiving service in Lafia to commemorate its 60th anniversary, with a call for renewed commitment to professionalism and the promotion of sports development in the country.
The thanksgiving service, which took place at Victory Life Baptist Church, Millionaires Quarters, Lafia, was led by the Nasarawa State Chairman of SWAN, Mr. Smah George, as part of activities marking six decades of the association’s impactful existence.
He described sports journalists as critical partners in promoting national unity, fitness, and youth development.
Rev. Gajere urged SWAN members to continue to uphold ethical standards in their reportage and to use their platforms to educate Nigerians on the health and social benefits of regular exercise.
In his remarks, the Nasarawa State SWAN Chairman, Mr. Smah George, expressed gratitude to God for sustaining the association through six decades of achievements and challenges.
He noted that the thanksgiving service was an expression of appreciation for divine guidance and protection over members of the association.
Mr. George called on governments at all levels to place greater emphasis on sports development, noting its potential to create employment, enhance the nation’s image, and promote physical and mental health among citizens.
“Sports is not just a game; it is an industry with vast economic and health benefits. If given the right attention, it can serve as a tool for national development and youth empowerment,” George stated.
