The Muslim Council of Taraba State has announced a total ban on all forms of wedding parties in Jalingo, the state capital.
The decision, reached by all Imams in collaboration with traditional rulers and backed by relevant authorities, specifically prohibits social events such as Kauyawa (villagers’ day) and Ajo parties, which are often characterized by youths dressing in torn clothes and dancing late into the night in the name of wedding celebrations.
Announcing the ruling on behalf of the council, the Chief Imam of Mayo Gwoi Jummat Mosque, Imam Tajudeen Nuhu, said the move became necessary to curb practices considered un-Islamic and disruptive to community morals.
The council further warned that any Muslim who disobeys the directive will not have an imam officiate their marriage contract (Nikah). In addition, funeral prayers (Salat al-Janazah), Islamic wedding lectures, or naming ceremonies will not be conducted in the homes of violators.
Clerics were also cautioned against attending such banned functions, as doing so could attract disciplinary measures, including removal from their positions.
