The All Progressives Congress (APC) has recorded a decisive victory in the Ghari/Tsanyawa by-election held on Saturday in Kano State, reaffirming its dominance in the political landscape of the state.
The Returning Officer for the election, Professor Muhammad Waziri of Bayero University, announced the official results at about 6:10 a.m. on Sunday, declaring Garba Ya’u Gwarmai of the APC as the winner. Gwarmai polled 31,472 votes, defeating his closest rival, Yusuf Ali Maigado of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), who secured 27,931 votes.
The by-election was conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) following the declaration of vacancy for the constituency seat.
The contest was largely seen as a test of popularity between the APC and NNPP, the two major political parties in Kano State.
With the victory, APC supporters across Ghari and Tsanyawa trooped out in jubilation, describing the win as a reflection of the people’s confidence in the party.
Party leaders in the state also commended the electorate for their peaceful conduct during the polls.
Meanwhile, observers noted that the election was fiercely contested, underscoring the rivalry between the APC and NNPP, especially in Kano, where political influence remains hotly contested.
Political analysts believe that the outcome of the by-election could have wider implications for the 2027 general elections, as both parties continue to consolidate their support base in Kano, one of Nigeria’s most politically strategic states.
