Equity Now: Advocacy Group Demands Zoning of Nasarawa South Senate Seat to Keana in 2027

By Suleiman Abubakar Rimi Uku Lafia

A prominent political advocacy group under the banner of "Keana Equity Movement (KEM)" has called for the zoning of the Nasarawa South Senatorial seat to Keana Local Government Area ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The group argues that if fairness, justice, and equity are to be the guiding principles of political representation, then Keana LGA, which has never produced a senator since Nigeria's return to democracy in 1999, deserves the opportunity to represent the district at the National Assembly.

According to a statement released by KEM, the historical imbalance in the distribution of the senatorial position among the five local governments that make up Nasarawa South must now be corrected.

“It is on record that Doma, Lafia, and Obi LGAs have all had the privilege of producing senators. Meanwhile, Keana and Awe have been left behind. It is time to change the narrative,” the group declared.

A breakdown of past representation in the senatorial district highlights the disparity:

Doma LGA: Late Senator Emmanuel Okpede and the current senator, Mohammed Ogoshi Onawo

Lafia LGA: Former Deputy Senate President Haruna Abubakar and Sen. Umaru Tanko Al-Makura

Obi LGA: Longest-serving senator from the zone, Sen. Solomon Asonya Adokwe

Despite being an integral part of the district, Keana and Awe LGAs have never held the senatorial office.

KEM insists that 2027 must mark a turning point, urging political stakeholders, party leaders, and community elders to support zoning the Senate seat to Keana.

“This is not about sentiment; it’s about justice and equal opportunity. Every local government deserves a fair shot at representation,” the group added.

With growing support from community leaders, youth organizations, and political observers, the Keana Equity Movement is poised to be a defining voice in the district's political landscape ahead of 2027.
