A renowned traditional medicine practitioner, Mr. David Jacob, has called for increased investment and institutional support for the traditional medicine sector in Nigeria, describing it as a key driver of improved healthcare access and national development.
Speaking during the fourth anniversary celebration of the David Trado Medical Clinic in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, Jacob urged government at all levels and well-meaning Nigerians to recognize and invest in the sector's vast potential.
“Traditional Medicine Is Not Witchcraft” – Jacob Debunks Misconceptions
Jacob, who is the founder and chief consultant at the clinic, emphasized that traditional medicine is not synonymous with superstition or witchcraft, as commonly believed.
“The gift of traditional healing is from God, passed down through our ancestors using natural herbs and roots to treat illnesses. I am not a ‘babalawo.’ I don’t invoke spirits. We use diagnostic tools like X-ray machines here,” he said.
He maintained that many Nigerians often seek help from traditional medicine after failing to find solutions in modern hospitals.
Sector Has Economic, Health Potential
According to Jacob, if traditional medicine is properly funded and regulated, it can contribute significantly to Nigeria’s healthcare delivery system and economic growth, especially in rural areas where access to orthodox medicine is limited.
“There are huge economic opportunities in this sector. With proper support and investment, traditional medicine can create jobs, improve public health, and reduce dependency on foreign pharmaceuticals,” he stated.
Public Enlightenment Key to Sectoral Growth
Jacob stressed the need for more public sensitization to distinguish between traditional medicine and spiritual divination.
“Many Nigerians reject traditional medicine because they confuse it with sorcery. If people are properly informed, they will appreciate the value it brings to their well-being,” he added.
A Journey of Faith, Passion, and Resilience
Sharing his personal story, Jacob reflected on how his determination and faith laid the foundation for the clinic’s success.
“I prayed to God to give me a place where people can come for healing. Today, this clinic stands as a testimony. I encourage young people: don’t give up, trust God, stay focused, and your time will come,” he said.
He also expressed heartfelt gratitude to his mother and supporters, who believed in his dream and supported him over the years.
Mr. Jacob’s call comes at a time when global health institutions, including the World Health Organization (WHO), are advocating the integration of traditional medicine into national health systems.
His message underscores the urgent need for Nigeria to harness its indigenous medical knowledge for the benefit of its citizens.
