The Governing Council of Isa Mustapha Agwai I Polytechnic (IMAP), Lafia, has debunked recent allegations circulating on social media that question the integrity of the ongoing selection process for the institution’s substantive Rector.
In a strongly worded statement signed by Mukhtar Wakeel, Director of Information, Public Relations and Protocol, the Council described the claims as “unfounded, misleading, and orchestrated by self serving individuals intent on derailing the institution’s steady progress.”
The Council, chaired by renowned academic and former Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Lafia, Prof. Muhammad Sanusi Liman, reaffirmed its strict adherence to the provisions of the IMAP Establishment Law (2020) and other relevant regulatory frameworks guiding appointments in tertiary institutions.
“Sections 21(4) and 21(5) of the law clearly empower the Governing Council to undertake the appointment of a Rector where a vacancy exists. In compliance, we placed public advertisements, constituted a legally backed Search Team, and conducted transparent interviews for shortlisted candidates,” the statement clarified.
While addressing a petition reportedly signed by eight Chief Lecturers, the Council pointed out that only six of the individuals held the position of Chief Lecturer. It further noted that two of the petitioners were part of the selection process and received allowances, undermining the credibility of their objections.
In contrast, 58 lecturers have signed a counter-position in support of the Council’s handling of the process.
The Governing Council also stressed that the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) template often cited in the criticisms is not a legal requirement but a mere guide
applicable only where domesticated by state law, which Nasarawa State has not done.
“Several recent federal and state polytechnics have followed their respective establishment laws in appointing rectors, not the NBTE template. IMAP is no exception,” the statement emphasized.
Prof. Liman reiterated the Council’s commitment to institutional reform, academic excellence, and strict compliance with due process, stating that “no amount of falsehood or orchestrated distractions will derail our commitment to uplifting the Polytechnic’s standards.”
He urged stakeholders to focus on building the institution rather than engaging in “destructive theatrics” that risk undermining ongoing development efforts.
“The Governing Council remains resolute, transparent, and unapologetic in its pursuit of a credible and law abiding selection process that will position IMAP for greater heights,” the statement concluded.
