Governor Abdullahi Sule has reiterated his administration's unwavering commitment to implementing the new national minimum wage, assuring workers that their welfare remains a top priority.
The Governor made this declaration shortly after signing the 2024 supplementary budget into law at the Government House on Wednesday.
He emphasized that his administration is fully prepared to implement the wage, pending the official presentation of a committee report outlining its modalities.
Addressing concerns raised on social media suggesting inaction on the minimum wage, Governor Sule reminded the public of Nasarawa State’s proactive stance on the matter.
"As you are all aware, Nasarawa State was among the first to commit to paying the minimum wage upon its approval. However, labor officials initially prioritized promotions over the wage implementation, compelling us to address promotions from 2019 to 2023, which we fulfilled," Sule stated.
The Governor highlighted that the state is now one of the few in Nigeria to be up to date with staff promotions through 2023. Notwithstanding this achievement, his administration set up a committee led by Deputy Governor Dr. Emmanuel Akabe to review the minimum wage implementation process.
Although the committee has completed its work, Governor Sule explained that the Deputy Governor’s absence has delayed the formal presentation of the report.
"Out of respect, we are awaiting the Deputy Governor's return. However, we have already reviewed the committee’s findings and are committed to implementing the wage without delay," he added.
Governor Sule also underscored his administration's dedication to retirees, citing the full payment of gratuities for workers who retired between 1996 and 2011.
"We have paid 100% gratuities to retired workers from 1996 to 2011, and we are now focusing on subsequent years. Regardless of political affiliations or personal interests, we aim to ensure equitable payment for all retirees," he affirmed.
The Governor dismissed practices in other states where announcements precede protracted committee reviews, stressing that Nasarawa State’s approach would be different.
"When we announce the wage, it will be implemented that same month. We won't announce and then set up a committee to review—it’s not respectful to workers," he noted.
Governor Sule concluded by appealing to labor unions and social media critics to recognize his administration’s genuine efforts to improve workers’ welfare.
"We are committed to both current and retired workers. We will not compromise on our responsibility to those serving the state," he assured.
