Yahaya Kana Ismaila, a prominent community leader from Eloyi Mba-Odama in Nasarawa State, has raised concerns regarding a proposed bill by Senator Aliyu Wadadda to convert the Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa into a specialized Federal University of Mining Technology. In a detailed letter addressed to the Senate President, Ismaila outlined potential risks associated with the proposal, emphasizing the broader socio-educational mandate the polytechnic currently serves.
The Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa, he noted, offers a diverse array of programs, including science, engineering, environmental technology, and technical social sciences, catering to a wide range of societal and economic needs. Ismaila argued that transforming it into a single-stream institution would significantly narrow its scope and limit its capacity to address diverse educational demands.
He instead proposed a more inclusive approach, such as establishing a Faculty of Mining Technology within the polytechnic, which would preserve its comprehensive functionality while advancing mining education. Alternatively, he suggested creating a standalone Federal University of Mining Technology in the Edyene-Mbeki region, known as a hub for mining activities in Nasarawa State.
In his appeal, Ismaila urged the Senate to stand down the bill, cautioning against its potential counterproductive outcomes. He advocated for a balanced and comprehensive strategy that would address the educational and developmental needs of both the state and the nation.
