Kano State Governor, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, has reaffirmed Kano’s commitment to sustainable agricultural development during the Africa Food Systems Forum (AFSF) in Kigali, Rwanda. Governor Yusuf, represented by the Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Hon. Dr. Danjuma Mahmoud, emphasized the state's focus on climate-smart actions and partnerships with the private sector to ensure long-term agricultural resilience.
Speaking at a side event organized by the Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA) on September 2, 2024, Governor Yusuf lauded the pivotal role of the Kano State Agropastoral Development Project (KSADP) in driving agricultural transformation.
Funded by the Islamic Development Bank and the Lives and Livelihoods Funds, KSADP has significantly advanced food security and agricultural development in the state.
Governor Yusuf highlighted notable yield increases in rice, millet, sorghum, and maize due to the adoption of advanced technologies and climate-smart agricultural practices.
He also praised Sasakawa Africa Association for its continuous support in crop protection and production, contributing to the agricultural success of Kano and Nigeria at large.
Dr. Makoto Kitanaka, President of Sasakawa Africa Association, expressed optimism about the ongoing agricultural efforts, while Dr. Godwin Atser, Country Director of Sasakawa Africa Association Nigeria, stressed the need for further investments in sustainable agricultural transformation to address rural poverty.
The event convened key stakeholders from various organizations, including KSADP, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the Islamic Development Bank, to discuss strategies for food systems transformation in Africa.
The forum aims to foster sustainable agricultural practices in the face of climate challenges.
The AFSF, running from September 2-6, 2024, brings together over 5,000 delegates under the theme "Innovate, Accelerate, Scale: Delivering Food Systems Transformation in a Digital and Climate Era.
