The Honourable Attorney-General of Nasarawa State, Labaran Shuaibu Magaji Esq, has expressed profound appreciation for the Supreme Court's recent judgment granting autonomy to local governments. Delivered on July 11, 2024, in Suit No: SC/CV/343/2004 - Attorney General of the Federation v. Attorney General of Abia State & 35 Ors, this decision is hailed as a significant milestone for Nigeria's democracy and local governance.
Speaking on July 12, 2024, Magaji praised the judgment, emphasizing that it protects local government funds from undue interference.
He affirmed that under the leadership of Governor Engr. Abdullahi Sule FNSE, Nasarawa State supports this decision, which aligns with their commitment to democracy, transparency, and good governance.
"The autonomy granted by the Supreme Court will enhance grassroots democracy, empowering local authorities to make impactful decisions.
This decision reinforces federalism principles and strengthens our democratic foundation," Magaji stated.
He assured that Nasarawa State will diligently implement the judgment to ensure independent, transparent, and accountable local government operations. This autonomy is expected to improve service delivery and development at the grassroots level.
Magaji called on stakeholders, including local government officials, civil society organizations, and the public, to support the judgment and work together for the benefit of Nasarawa State communities.
