Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has called on Nigerians to reaffirm their dedication to democratic principles as the nation marks this year's Democracy Day.
In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, Governor Bago emphasized the importance of this day in symbolizing the triumph of the people's collective will over dictatorship and oppression.
Governor Bago highlighted that Democracy Day serves as a reminder of the struggles, sacrifices, and resilience of Nigerians who have continually demonstrated their commitment to democracy through electoral participation, advocacy for human rights, and defense of the rule of law.
He praised the significant milestones democracy has achieved in Nigeria, such as enhanced transparency, accountability in governance, vibrant political competition, and increased civic engagement.
However, he expressed concern over ongoing challenges such as electoral violence, insecurity, ethnic and religious intolerance, and economic hardship that hinder the growth and development of democracy in Nigeria.
The Governor urged Nigerians to reflect on the progress made and to deepen democratic ideals through renewed commitment and collective efforts.
Governor Bago advocated for continuous electoral reforms, the strengthening of democratic institutions, and the promotion of youth and women's participation in politics.
He also emphasized the need for investments in education and youth empowerment and the importance of addressing socio-economic challenges to advance democracy in Nigeria.
“As we celebrate Democracy Day, let us honor the sacrifices of past heroes and heroines who fought for democracy and our freedom,” Governor Bago stated, assuring the people of Niger State of his unwavering commitment to a secure, transformed, and prosperous state in line with his New Niger agenda.
