Lagos, June 24, 2024 - U.S.-based Nigerian economist, Dr. Samuel Enajite Enajero, has identified "past-binding" and "future-binding" practices as major obstacles to Nigeria's economic development.
In a paper presented at the 94th Anniversary of the Okpe Union in Lagos, Enajero elaborated on these concepts and proposed a path forward for the nation.
Enajero explained that "past-binding ceremonial encapsulation" refers to societal adherence to outdated traditions and values that hinder progress.
This includes traditional values, ethnic competition for resources, suppression of women, and religious beliefs.
He contrasted this with European history, where ceremonial practices were gradually replaced by instrumental values through significant social and religious reforms.
Enajero called for a clear delineation of roles for traditional rulers in Nigeria, suggesting that their involvement in secular society should be minimized.
He praised the British model, where the monarchy, while still symbolic, contributes economically through tourism and maintains a largely ceremonial role.
The economist also highlighted the need for Nigeria to adopt instrumental values, which focus on practical, problem-solving approaches to economic development.
He argued that technological innovation and changes in societal habits are crucial for progress.
Enajero criticized the persistence of ceremonial values in Africa, which he believes are remnants of colonial indirect rule that entrenched traditional authority figures in governance.
Enajero's recommendations include redefining the roles of traditional rulers, fostering technological adoption, and encouraging societal shifts towards instrumental values.
He emphasized that economic development depends on evolving beyond outdated practices and embracing modern, rational approaches to problem-solving.
Enajero concluded by urging Nigerian leaders, including President Tinubu and Senate President Akpabio, to consider these insights in their policy-making efforts, particularly in assigning constitutional roles to traditional rulers that align with contemporary governance and development goals.
