Nasarawa State University, Keffi, was plunged into chaos as a stampede broke out on Friday morning, March 22, 2024. Governor Engr. Abdullahi A. Sule expressed deep shock upon learning of the incident.
The unfortunate event occurred when suspected hoodlums and misguided students forcibly entered the university's convocation ground in an attempt to seize rice meant for distribution as palliatives to students. This occurred mere hours before the scheduled official flag-off ceremony.
Governor Sule had initiated a commendable program to distribute rice and cash allowances of N5000 to students across tertiary institutions in the state. This initiative had been successfully implemented at various institutions without incident.
Regrettably, the stampede resulted in the tragic loss of two students' lives, a loss Governor Sule mourned deeply. He extended condolences to the families and friends of the deceased, emphasizing the pain of young lives cut short under such circumstances.
In response, Governor Sule swiftly directed authorities at Nasarawa State University, Keffi, and security agencies to launch an immediate investigation into the incident. The state's Deputy Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Agbadu Akabe, visited the university for a fact-finding mission and to assess the injured.
Assurances were given that those found culpable would face prosecution. Despite this tragedy, Governor Sule reaffirmed his commitment to continuing the distribution of palliatives, aimed at easing the hardships faced by students and citizens of Nasarawa State.
Ibrahim Addra, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, issued this statement from the Government House, underscoring the state government's determination to pursue justice and maintain its support for the people.
