State Government Imposes Total Ban on Charcoal Production in Effort to Combat Deforestation, Warns Dealers of Strict Action

Sequel to the incessant
indescriminate felling of trees  for Charcoal production , the state commissioner of Environment  and Natural Resources Honorable Yakubu Kwanta opined that the state government has placed a total ban on the production of charcoal in a commercial quantities in the state as well as vowed to deal decisively with charcoal dealers when found conveying the products  along highways in the state 

Hon Kwanta who gave the warning in an interview with Journalists in Lafia the state capital Friday while lamenting on the level of destruction done to the forest across the state as a result of charcoal production in commercial quantities .

 According to Kwanta" The state government has expressed sadness over the massive destruction of Natural vegetation across the state and will never fold its hands seeing some individual destroying trees without replacement. Anyone caught felling trees without permission by the government would surely face the wrath of the Law . We must preserve and protect our Natural environment for the future generation. This act of felling of trees can result to desertfcation'.

He further called on the Traditional rulers and other stakeholders to educate their subjects on the danger of felling trees without replacement,noting that the globe is experiencing climate change accompanied with negative effect on human existence. Therefore, called on residents in the state to always protect their environment for  a healthy living for all.

" I am appealing to the residents of Nasarawa state to imbibe the spirit of planting trees around their homes and farms. It will help tremendously in protecting our environment from hazards ". The commissioner admonished.

Speaking further on the significance of  the monthly sanitation in the state, he called on the youth to embrace the exercise by participating fully in order to  keep their vicinities clean and free from environmental diseases; saying that the youth are  the vanguard  and the backbone of every society and their contributions to societal development is enormous.

The commissioner however charged Forestry  officers across the state to live up to their expectations by closely monitor the activities of charcoal dealers and producers in the state ; saying that the ministry will not relent in its  from prosecuting violators if found wanting base on the environmental existing Laws of the land.
