President Tinubu Urges Suspension of Economic Sanctions on Niger Other ECOWAS Nations

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS, has appealed for the suspension of economic sanctions imposed on Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea by the regional bloc.

Speaking at an Extraordinary Summit in Abuja, President Tinubu emphasized the need to prioritize the welfare of the people in the region through democratic governance and cooperation among member states.

The President highlighted the original objectives of ECOWAS, rooted in principles of security, democratic governance, and economic development for all West African nations. He stressed that the sanctions, intended to encourage dialogue, had become counterproductive and should be abandoned.

President Tinubu invoked the spirit of compassion and unity associated with the holy month of Ramadan and Lent, urging fellow leaders to extend a hand of friendship to the affected nations. He proposed the indefinite suspension of economic sanctions and called for enhanced humanitarian assistance to the vulnerable populations.

Emphasizing the importance of cooperation in addressing common challenges, from climate change to extremism, President Tinubu urged a return to dialogue and brotherly engagement among ECOWAS member states.

He called upon the leadership of Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali, and Niger to embrace the offer of dialogue and cooperation, emphasizing the shared responsibility of shaping the region's future.
