FRSC Launches 'Operation Hatsarin Kalangu' to Tackle Passenger Overloading in Benue

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Benue Sector Command, has commenced "Operation Hatsarin Kalangu," a three-day special enforcement exercise aimed at curbing dangerous passenger overloading and reducing road traffic crashes across the state.
The operation, which began on Monday and will end on Wednesday, is being carried out in compliance with the directive of the FRSC Zonal Command.
This was disclosed in a statement issued in Makurdi by the Command's Public Education Officer, SRC Ngozi Ahula.
According to the statement, the exercise is specifically targeted at eliminating the unsafe "Kalangu" loading pattern—a practice where passengers are seated around the driver's seat, restricting the driver's movement, impairing vehicle control, and increasing the risk of fatal road crashes.
The Command said its personnel would intensify enforcement against passenger overloading and other traffic violations during the operation, while also embarking on public enlightenment campaigns to educate motorists and passengers on road safety and the dangers of unsafe loading practices.
The Benue Sector Commander, Victory Kayode-Oni, disclosed that adequate personnel and logistics had been deployed across the state to ensure the successful implementation of the special patrol.
He urged commercial drivers and other motorists to desist from dangerous loading practices and comply with all traffic regulations, warning that violators would be sanctioned in line with the provisions of the National Road Traffic Regulations.
The Sector Commander also appealed to transport unions, fleet operators, and members of the public to cooperate with FRSC personnel throughout the operation.
He emphasized that ensuring safety on the nation's highways requires the collective commitment of all stakeholders and reaffirmed the Corps' determination to protect lives and property through sustained road safety initiatives across Benue State.
