FRSC Advocates Bicycle Use for Cleaner Environment, Better Health, Lower Transport Costs

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has called on Nigerians, particularly residents of urban centres, to embrace the use of bicycles as a sustainable means of transportation capable of improving public health, protecting the environment and reducing transportation expenses.
The Benue State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Victory Kayode-Oni, made the appeal on Wednesday in Makurdi during the commemoration of the 2026 World Bicycle Day, an annual event observed globally on June 3.
Speaking at the event, Kayode-Oni explained that World Bicycle Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) during its 72nd session in 2017 to celebrate the bicycle and highlight its numerous benefits to humanity.
She noted that the theme of the 2026 celebration, “Boosting Life with Bicycle,” underscores the importance of promoting non-motorised mobility, especially within urban areas, as a safer, healthier and more environmentally friendly mode of transportation.
According to the sector commander, bicycles contribute significantly to environmental sustainability because they do not emit harmful gases and are considered a zero-emission means of transportation.
“Bicycles are ecosystem-friendly and contribute to the global fight against climate change because they do not produce harmful emissions,” she said.
Kayode-Oni also highlighted the health benefits of cycling, describing it as an effective form of physical exercise that supports healthy living and overall wellbeing.
She further pointed out the economic advantages of bicycle use, noting that cyclists do not spend money on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) or diesel and incur only minimal maintenance costs.
The FRSC commander urged Nigerians to adopt cycling wherever feasible, describing it as a cost-effective, environmentally friendly and healthy transportation option.
She explained that the FRSC aligns with United Nations policies on road safety administration and traffic management, making its participation in the annual observance both necessary and strategic.
Kayode-Oni disclosed that the corps has consistently commemorated World Bicycle Day since 2018, adding that the event has become a regular feature in its annual calendar.
She said the FRSC collaborates with stakeholders, including the Bicycle Riders Association in Benue State, to create awareness and sensitise the public on the importance and benefits of cycling.
The event formed part of efforts by the corps to promote safer roads, sustainable mobility and improved public health through alternative transportation methods.
