In Bauchi: Bandits release six abducted after collecting ransom

Residents of Gwammadaji community and surrounding villages in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area of Bauchi State have raised an alarm that the sum of N25 million was paid as ransom to kidnappers in order to secure the release of sixteen members of the community.
The community also expressed dismay over what it described as neglect by the government at all levels in the state during the period of sorrow and distress they experienced when the sixteen people were abducted by suspected kidnappers.
In a statement signed and issued to journalists in Bauchi by Bakiru Hassan Maga Takadda on behalf of the Gwammadaji Community Development Association, he lamented that during the trying moment there was no consolation from either the local government or the state government.
He stressed, “However, it is important to clearly state that, as earlier mentioned to the public, no government official, security personnel, or political representative from any level came forward to sympathize with the affected families or the community during this ordeal.”
He added that, “The responsibility of securing the release of the victims was carried entirely by the affected families and members of the community.”
According to him, “Through collective effort and contributions from relatives, friends, and concerned members of the community, the families were able to raise ₦25,000,000 which was paid as ransom to secure the release of the kidnapped victims.”
In the statement, he narrated the kidnapping of residents of Gwammadaji, Wurno, Kundak and Burga communities and their rescue after 57 days in captivity.
He wrote, “On behalf of the Gwammadaji Community Development Association and the affected families, we issue this statement to inform the public about the unfortunate abduction that occurred on 10th January, 2026 and to express our gratitude following the safe return of the victims.”
According to him, “On the said date, during a wedding ceremony involving the family of Malam Abubakar Santuraki Ubandoman Lim in Gwammadaji town, Dull B Ward of Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area in Bauchi State, the wedding convoy escorting the bride to Dogo Yeli in Bachama Ward, Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State was ambushed by armed kidnappers along the route.”
Bakiru Hassan stated, “The attackers forcefully abducted approximately sixteen individuals, including the bride, members of the bridal escort, and friends of the groom. The victims were all indigenes of Gwammadaji, Wurno and Burga communities in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area of Bauchi State.”
“The incident caused widespread fear, shock and emotional hardship for the families and the entire community. For fifty-seven painful days, the victims remained in captivity under unknown and extremely difficult conditions. During this period, families, relatives and well-wishers lived in deep anxiety while continuing to pray and hope for their safe return,” he added.
He further stated, “Throughout those difficult weeks, the Gwammadaji community received sympathy, encouragement and prayers from individuals, religious leaders, community organisations and concerned citizens across different parts of the country.
Their solidarity helped strengthen the families during a time of serious emotional distress.”
He added, “Today, we give thanks to Almighty Allah (SWT) for His mercy and protection, which made it possible for the abducted victims to regain their freedom after spending 57 days in captivity.
"We sincerely thank Allah (SWT) for preserving their lives and bringing them back to their families and community.”
The community expressed deep appreciation to the general public, friends, community leaders, religious scholars and everyone who showed concern, offered prayers and stood in solidarity with the affected families throughout the difficult period.
The Gwammadaji Community Development Association also appreciated all individuals and institutions who made efforts through prayers, advocacy or other forms of support towards the eventual safe return of the victims.
He added, “While we celebrate the safe return of our people, this incident highlights the urgent need for stronger security measures along major roads and inter-state routes in order to protect citizens from similar attacks in the future.
