Sule Intervenes, Averts NBS Strike as Workers Suspend Ultimatum
Unions Hail Information Commissioner, Back Planned Digital Transformation of State Broadcaster
A looming industrial crisis at the Nasarawa Broadcasting Service (NBS) has been averted following the timely intervention of Abdullahi Sule, prompting workers to suspend their one-month strike ultimatum.
The Joint Action Committee (JAC) comprising the Nigeria Union of Journalists and the Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers Union announced the suspension after a high-level reconciliation meeting convened by the state government in Lafia.
The decision followed intense negotiations involving union leaders, NBS management, representatives of the Office of the Head of Civil Service, and the Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Ibrahim Tanko.
The unions had earlier issued a one-month ultimatum citing poor welfare conditions, delayed promotions, security concerns, and lack of modern broadcast equipment, warning that failure to address the issues could cripple operations at the state-owned media outfit.
However, the intervention by the state government halted the planned industrial action, restoring calm to the broadcasting service.
Speaking after the meeting, Dr. Tanko assured workers that government would address their grievances through collaborative efforts with relevant authorities.
“We will put our heads together to ensure that the necessary things are put on ground based on their grievances,” he stated, urging patience and professionalism among staff.
