Fresh political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections have gathered momentum as former Kano State governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has concluded plans to defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The development follows high-level negotiations between Kwankwaso and ADC leadership, amid growing speculation of a broad opposition alliance that could produce a joint presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 elections.
ADC Confirms Defection, Eyes Stronger Opposition Bloc
National Publicity Secretary of the ADC, Bolaji Abdullahi, confirmed the move, describing it as a significant boost to opposition efforts aimed at unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to him, Kwankwaso’s entry into the party would strengthen its structure and enhance coalition-building efforts across the country.
Kwankwasiyya Movement Directs Nationwide Mobilisation
The Kwankwasiyya Movement, through its spokesperson Habib Mohammed, announced that all arrangements had been finalised for the former governor’s formal registration in Kano.
Members across Nigeria have been directed to immediately align with the ADC and actively participate in party activities, signaling a coordinated grassroots mobilisation strategy.
NNPP Leadership Caught Unaware
Sources within the NNPP disclosed that the party leadership was not formally informed prior to the announcement, describing the development as unexpected.
While the party is yet to take an official position, insiders hinted at possible internal restructuring as some key figures may not follow Kwankwaso to the ADC.

In his resignation letter, Kwankwaso cited the need for “strategic political realignment” as the reason for leaving the NNPP.

The ADC spokesperson also criticised the ruling APC, arguing that its cohesion is largely tied to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
