In commemoration of his 66th birthday, the Governor of Nasarawa State, Engr. Abdullahi Sule, has granted amnesty to 32 inmates and approved a full pardon for one inmate across correctional centres in the state.
The Governor urged the beneficiaries to embrace responsible living and lawful conduct as they reintegrate into society, stressing the need for them to justify the mercy extended to them.
Explaining the gesture, Governor Sule disclosed that upon receiving the initial list of inmates recommended for amnesty by the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, he requested that the number be increased to reflect the significance of his 66th birthday.
However, after a careful and professional review, the council returned with 33 qualified cases, citing the nature of the remaining matters.
He commended the council for its integrity and adherence to due process, and further donated the sum of one million naira to inmates who were not beneficiaries of the amnesty, directing correctional authorities to procure two cows for their welfare.
Earlier, the Honourable Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Nasarawa State, Barr. Isaac Danladi, led the Permanent Secretary, directors, deputy directors, lawyers and other staff of the Ministry of Justice to the Lafia Correctional Centre, the venue of the event.
Speaking at the ceremony, Barr. Danladi commended Governor Sule for approving the release of a total of 33 inmates in celebration of his birthday, describing the gesture as a reflection of compassion, statesmanship and a justice system guided by mercy.
He explained that the sentences of the 32 inmates were remitted through the payment of fines and compensation to victims, while the remaining beneficiary, who had completed his jail term, was granted a full pardon by the Governor.
According to the Attorney General, the action underscores Governor Sule’s deep belief in rehabilitation, restorative justice and the provision of second chances for deserving citizens.
Barr. Danladi also expressed appreciation to the Governor for approving the recommendations of the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, assuring that the council discharged its responsibilities with diligence, integrity and thoroughness, with all stakeholders adequately represented.
He noted that the exercise reinforces the state’s commitment to a humane, fair and responsive justice system, while advising the beneficiaries to rebuild their lives and contribute meaningfully to the peace and development of Nasarawa State.
