The Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Saidu Paiko, Commanding Officer of the 202 Tank Battalion, who was killed alongside several soldiers during a violent clash with Boko Haram terrorists in Kashimri, a community in Bama Local Government Area of Borno State.
The incident occurred on October 17, 2025, when troops under Operation Hadin Kai successfully repelled an attempted attack by the insurgents but suffered casualties in the process.
Army Confirms Loss of Brave Commander
In a statement issued by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Major Appolonia Anele, the Army described the encounter as fierce, noting that while troops neutralized several terrorists and destroyed their hideouts, the battle also claimed the lives of the Commanding Officer and a number of his men.
“The encounter took its toll on our side, as the Commanding Officer, 202 Tank Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Saidu Paiko, and a few other valiant soldiers paid the supreme price as they fell in battle,” Anele stated.
She added that the counteroffensive operation launched by the troops led to the destruction of multiple Boko Haram camps, frustrating the insurgents’ attempts to destabilize nearby communities.
Army Chief Mourns Fallen Heroes
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing the late commander and his men as “patriots who demonstrated uncommon courage in the line of duty.”
He extended condolences to their families and assured that the Army remains resolute in its mission to eradicate terrorism and restore lasting peace across Borno State and the entire North-East.
“Their sacrifices will never be forgotten. We will continue to pursue all terrorist elements until peace and security are fully achieved,” the Army Chief said.
Army Appeals for Public Decorum
The Army further urged members of the public and the media to avoid posting images of the fallen soldiers on social media until their next of kin have been officially notified, emphasizing respect for their dignity and that of their families.

This development comes just months after a similar ambush in Benue State, where two soldiers were killed during a raid on Ijaha Ikobi community in Apa Local Government Area, with the attackers reportedly escaping with military rifles.
