The Commissioner for Water Resources, Environment, and Climate Change in Benue State, Hon. Odoh Ugwu, has called for sustainable practices in harnessing the resources of waterways in the country.
He stated this during an address to mark this year's World Maritime Day in Makurdi, the capital of Benue State in North Central Nigeria.
Hon. Ugwu emphasized that the newly established Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy will add value in playing a crucial role in ensuring that development in these sectors is done with a focus on environmental responsibility and long-term benefits.
The Commissioner expressed the belief that the Blue Economy will present a golden opportunity for economic growth and job creation in Benue State.
"By investing in sustainable fisheries, river transport, and water-based tourism, we can not only boost our local economy but also protect our natural resources for future generations".
He said the global community was increasingly recognizing the importance of maritime resources in addressing climate change and building resilience.
"As such, it is imperative that we work together to develop innovative solutions that will ensure the sustainable use of our waterways while also mitigating the impact of climate change on our communities".
Ugwu expressed the commitment of the state government to work closely with stakeholders at the local, national, and international levels to promote sustainable practices in the maritime sector.
He noted that by collaborating with experts in the field and sharing best practices, "we can ensure that our efforts are aligned with global goals for sustainable development and climate action".
In particular, he affirmed that "one of the key priorities for the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy is to promote eco-friendly fishing practices that will help to preserve our marine ecosystems and protect the livelihoods of local fishing communities.
"By implementing measures to reduce bycatch, promote sustainable fishing techniques, and combat illegal fishing activities, we can ensure a healthy and thriving marine environment for future generations".
He also expressed optimism about the future of the Blue Economy in Benue State and believes that with the right policies and investments, the state can unlock the vast potential of its water resources for the benefit of all the people.
"By harnessing the power of the maritime sector, we can create new economic opportunities, improve food security, and build climate resilience in our communities".
The Water Resources Commissioner urged stakeholders, including government agencies, private sector partners, civil society organizations, and local communities, to join hands in the important endeavor.
"By working together, we can ensure that our maritime resources are managed sustainably and responsibly, for the benefit of current and future generations".
On the significance of the World Maritime Day, he reaffirmed the commitment to protect the nation's oceans and waterways, promote sustainable development in the maritime sector, and building climate resilience in various communities.
