The Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Danladi Jatau, PhD, has led a delegation of lawmakers to the 54th Annual Conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) African Region, which opened on Wednesday in the Republic of Gambia.
The high-profile gathering, attended by over 300 parliamentarians from 19 African Commonwealth countries, was declared open by the Gambian President, Adama Barrow, who underscored the critical role of legislators in strengthening democratic governance.
Themed “Strengthening Democratic Governance and Resilience in Africa: Tackling Conflicts, Economic Shocks and Climate Risks,” the conference aims to address pressing governance challenges across the continent.
In his opening remarks, President Barrow urged delegates to maximize the opportunities presented by the summit, emphasizing that legislative engagement and cooperation remain vital for Africa’s democratic and socio-economic advancement.
The Speaker of the Gambian Parliament, Hon. Fabakary Jatta, in his keynote address, welcomed participants and encouraged them to feel at home throughout the conference.
It was gathered that upon arrival, some lawmakers joined guided excursions to explore historic sites in the Gambia, enriching their understanding of the host country’s heritage.
