The Forum of Retired Inspectors General of Police has strongly refuted recent allegations suggesting that former IGP Sir Mike Okiro is attempting to usurp the powers of the incumbent Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
In a press statement signed by Supreme Ibitomi, Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to Sir Mike Okiro, the forum described the claims as "spurious, malicious, baseless, and entirely false," expressing dismay that such narratives are being circulated to smear the reputation of a respected former police chief.
The clarification comes in the wake of reports linking Sir Okiro to actions interpreted as interference in the affairs of the Nigeria Police Force.
However, the forum stressed that the recent gathering of retired IGPs was convened strictly to deliberate on the circumstances surrounding the compulsory retirement of certain senior police officers.
“Sir Mike Okiro was only acting in his capacity as the selected leader of the forum and not attempting to wield undue influence over the current IGP,” the statement read.
Highlighting the credibility of the current police leadership, the forum emphasized that IGP Kayode Egbetokun is an experienced, well-trained, and capable officer who requires no external direction in the discharge of his duties.
Reiterating their commitment to police welfare, the forum said:
“We believe the recent false publication originated from those content with the suffering of retired officers.
But we remain undeterred and will continue advocating for justice, dignity, and improved conditions for both serving and retired personnel.”
They urged the public to ignore the unfounded reports and instead focus on the pressing issues affecting national security and the police institution.
The statement concluded with a call for public support in strengthening the welfare system within the Nigeria Police Force.
“Sir Mike Okiro and the Forum of Retired IGPs remain steadfast in contributing to the advancement of justice, professionalism, and security in our country,” it added.
