The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Nasarawa State Council, has inaugurated an enforcement committee to curb the abuse of NUJ and press stickers on private and commercial vehicles, and to work closely with security agencies in ridding the state of quack journalists posing as media professionals.
This resolution was part of a communique issued at the end of its congress held at the NUJ Press Centre in Lafia, presided over by the State Council Chairman, Comrade Salihu Mohammed Alkali.
In the communique, the union expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security situation in parts of the state, referencing the recent abduction of Barrister Yusuf Musa, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism, and other victims of insecurity.
While acknowledging the growing commitment of security operatives, the union urged them to redouble efforts to stem the tide of criminality and ensure a safer environment for residents.
The NUJ also commended Governor Abdullahi Sule for his administration’s strides in infrastructural development, describing his interventions as transformative and responsible for enhancing the state’s physical outlook.
In a firm stance against misinformation, the union debunked the recent fake news alleging the collapse of the Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu Interchange, commonly referred to as the Lafia Flyover and Underpass, labeling such reports as baseless, mischievous, and detrimental to public trust.
Reaffirming its commitment to media ethics, the NUJ urged all practicing journalists in the state to uphold professional standards and remain vigilant in holding public officers accountable.
In honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, the congress observed a minute of silence, commending the Federal Government and Nigerians for the tributes paid to the late statesman.
The union further called on politicians and philanthropists to support ongoing development projects at the NUJ Secretariat, noting that a conducive work environment enhances journalistic productivity.
Journalists were also reminded to update their yearly practicing fees with the national headquarters, a move the union says will strengthen professional legitimacy and accountability.
The congress also applauded the NUJ National President, Comrade Alhasan Yahya, for appointing Comrade Hadiza Umar Lamido as the new Zonal Trustee, and officially inaugurated the North-Central Zonal Office Chapel (FRCN) as a recognized chapel of the NUJ, having met all constitutional requirements.
The communique was signed by Sunday John, Secretary of the NUJ Nasarawa State Council, on behalf of the Congress and the drafting committee chaired by Shuaibu Usman Muhammad, with Kalu Idika as Secretary and Safiya Salihu as Member.
