In a bold step toward enhancing medical innovation in the country, the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Lafia (FUTH Lafia) has held a strategic retreat dedicated to vaccine research and development. The event was organized in partnership with Innovative Biotech, Abuja, and the Centre for Advanced Medical Research and Training (CAMRET) of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto.
The two-day inaugural retreat, which took place at Julius Nyerere Crescent, Asokoro, Abuja, brought together health professionals, researchers, and institutional leaders to explore pathways for advancing Nigeria’s capacity in home-grown vaccine production.
Chief Medical Director of FUTH Lafia, Dr. Ikrama Hassan, said the retreat is in line with the Federal Government’s vision of fostering collaboration among medical research institutions.
He stressed that the partnership, especially with Innovative Biotech led by renowned vaccinologist Professor Simon Agwale, is a major step in positioning Lafia as a regional hub for vaccine development and disease surveillance.
Dr. Ikrama acknowledged the immense support of the Nasarawa State Governor, Engineer Abdullahi Sule, for his dedication to the realization of the project.
He also commended Deputy Governor Dr. Emmanuel Akabe for initiating the concept during his time as Commissioner for Health, as well as the current Commissioner, Dr. Gaza Gwamna, for sustaining the momentum.
In his remarks, Professor Simon Agwale praised FUTH Lafia for its commitment to scientific advancement and noted that the collaboration would fast-track the development of vaccines and medical solutions tailored to Nigeria’s specific health needs.
The retreat featured presentations, research sessions, and high-level engagements, with participation from key players in Nigeria’s healthcare and vaccine development ecosystem.
