Benue State University Makurdi, in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund, has organized a ten-day training of trainers on Gender-Based Violence in Emergencies (GBViE).
During a discussion with journalists at the event, Professor Charity Angya, a resource person and former Vice Chancellor of Benue State University, expressed the importance of the training in conflict-ridden regions where gender-based violence is prevalent.
She emphasized the need for strategic approaches to address and mitigate the impact of this issue.
The training program is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to handle gender-based violence emergencies, with the ultimate goal of empowering them to train others in utilizing the strategies learned.
"This initiative is deemed crucial in addressing the high rates of violence against women and children in conflict areas like Benue State".
Dr. Elijah Tersoo Ikpanor, Director of the Centre for Advancement and Linkages at Benue State University, highlighted the significance of the program in advancing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and addressing the escalating insecurity and humanitarian crises in North Central Nigeria.
The training, hosted by Benue State University in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund, aims to reach grassroots levels through NGOs, government agencies, local authorities, faith-based organizations, community leaders, and women and youth groups.
Dr. Ikpanor emphasised that efforts were being intensified to raise awareness and understanding of gender-based violence in crisis-prone areas like Benue State.
